tips from the CIMA Case Study markers!
At the recent CIMA conference there were a number of presentations by CIMA markers and case study writers.
They gave invaluable insights into what they are looking for in the exams – and in particular they highlighted the areas where many students fall short.
This is excellent feedback for students as it 'comes straight from the horses mouth'! They have produced and marked many exams so know exactly what they are talking about!
There feedback reinforces the fact that many students are still getting the basics wrong and how with good preparation and planning many more students could be achieving passes.
Here are their top 10 tips to help you succeed:
1. Plan your answers – don’t launch straight into your answer, think about the key points you want to raise and how your going to structure it before you begin writing.
2. Use the scenario throughout – ensure you consistently refer to pre-seen and unseen material.
3. Apply technical theory and models to the scenario given – don't just talk about them in isolation and when you do use theories and models ensure they are relevant.
4. Ensure you answer the specific question – not the question you wanted to be asked!
5. A good answer answers ALL parts of the questions – don't ignore the specific requirements of the question.
6. Use common sense combined with technical knowledge – take a moment to ensure you are on the right track.
7. Stating the obvious if its needed – don't just focus on the complex issues.
8. Set out answers with headings and short paragraphs – make it easier for the examiner to see the structure of your answer and give you those marks.
9. Write in short but complete sentences – don't waffle!
10. Critiquing skills – give balanced arguments with a conclusion.
